Melanoma: prevention and mole mapping

The dermatologist is the key specialist for early detection of melanoma, monitoring moles and pigmented lesions over time and using digital videodermoscopy for mole mapping and image comparison during follow-up. This approach helps identify high-risk lesions, decide which ones should be removed and avoid unnecessary excision of benign lesions.

Melanoma is a malignant skin tumour arising from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. It is a potentially aggressive cancer, often with rapid growth and a risk of metastasis if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage. It most commonly appears on the skin, but can also involve mucous membranes and the eyes.

Excessive, unprotected sun exposure, repeated sunburns in childhood or adolescence, tanning beds, fair skin type, family history of melanoma or other skin cancers, the presence of many moles or atypical nevi and certain conditions of immunosuppression all increase the risk.

Treatment options

At MAVIT, melanoma prevention is based on regular dermatology check-ups, digital mole mapping and careful attention to any changes in shape, colour or size of existing moles or new pigmented lesions. When a lesion appears suspicious, a biopsy or complete surgical excision with histological examination is performed to confirm the diagnosis and define the next steps. Daily sun protection, self-examination of the skin and scheduled specialist follow-up remain the most effective tools to detect melanoma in its earliest, most treatable stages.
