Basal and squamous cell carcinomas

Cutaneous carcinoma is a malignant tumour that arises from the cells lining the surface of the skin. In most cases, it is related to ultraviolet (UV) damage accumulated over time, especially in fair-skinned, older or immunosuppressed patients.

In dermatology, we mainly distinguish:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma: it can be infiltrative and may cause metastases if left untreated.
  • Basal cell carcinoma: it usually grows locally with low metastatic risk, but still requires appropriate treatment.

Therapeutic options

At MAVIT, the treatment of cutaneous carcinomas is defined after a specialist dermatological assessment. Options include cryotherapy, outpatient surgical excision and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), selected according to the site, size and depth of the lesion.

It is essential to perform histological examination of the removed tissue and to schedule regular follow-up, to reduce the risk of recurrence and detect new lesions at an early stage.
