Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) fall within dermatology and, more specifically, venereology – the field dealing with infections transmitted through sexual contact. They may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites and are mainly spread through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral intercourse, but also via direct mucosal contact or, less frequently, blood exposure. STIs can affect men and women of any age and cause symptoms such as burning on urination, abnormal discharge, genital itching or redness, lesions, blisters or pain during intercourse; however, many infections remain asymptomatic for a long time, increasing the risk of complications and transmission to partners.
