Hypertrichosis and excess hair: when hair becomes a problem
Hypertrichosis is an abnormal increase in hair in areas where only minimal hair is normally present. Excess hair can cause significant cosmetic distress in both women and men, especially when it appears on visible areas such as the face, arms or trunk.
Excess hair growth may be localised or diffuse and can be related to genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, medications or other medical conditions. It is important to distinguish hypertrichosis from hirsutism, which refers to terminal hair growth in typically male areas in women and often requires a targeted endocrine assessment.
