Burns: specialist management to minimise long-term consequences

At MAVIT, mild to moderate skin burns are managed with advanced dressings and tailored treatments to support tissue healing and minimise the risk of unaesthetic scars, while more severe or extensive burns are referred to specialised Burn Units.

Skin burns are acute injuries of the skin, often caused by domestic accidents, and represent one of the most frequent dermatologic emergencies. They are classified into degrees (from first to fourth) according to the depth of tissue damage and the extent of the area involved.

Early, well-structured treatment is crucial to guide tissue repair and reduce the likelihood of permanent, disfiguring scars. Dressings and protocols should be prescribed and monitored by dermatology specialists experienced in burn care.

Therapeutic perspectives

At MAVIT, depending on burn depth and extension, management may include:
•    specific creams and advanced wound dressings, used alone or in combination
•    oral or systemic therapies when general conditions require it
•    outpatient follow-up for superficial or limited burns
•    referral to a dedicated Burn Centre for deep or extensive lesions

Once burn scars have stabilised (usually after about 6 months), aesthetic and functional improvement can be pursued with:
•    fractional CO₂ laser
•    intense pulsed light (IPL) for hyperpigmented burn scars
•    photodynamic therapy in selected cases

The aim is to soften and fade burn scars as much as possible, improve skin quality and help the scar blend better with the surrounding tissue.
