Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder characterised by lighter (hypochromic) or completely white (achromic) patches caused by a lack or absence of melanin. These patches, ranging from pink to milky white, usually have well-defined borders, often slightly darker than the surrounding normal skin, and are frequently distributed symmetrically on the body.
Vitiligo can appear at any age, in all skin types and in both sexes. It is a benign, painless and non-contagious condition, but it may significantly affect body image and quality of life. In some patients, it is associated with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroiditis, autoimmune gastritis or diabetes, which makes specialist evaluation essential.
