Scars are the outcome of the skin’s repair process after trauma, surgery, burns or severe acne. They may be thin and barely visible, or raised, red, tight or depressed, depending on location, cause and the patient’s skin type.
A scar can be hypertrophic or keloid (thick, raised, sometimes itchy), atrophic (sunken, as in many acne scars) or contracture-like, when it restricts movement around joints or skin folds. Each scar has its own history, and this influences how it looks and how it should be treated.
