The Erbium:YAG (Er:YAG) laser is an ablative laser with a strong affinity for water, and is considered gentler than the CO₂ laser. Because skin contains around 75–80% water, the beam is almost completely absorbed; the energy is converted into heat and produces controlled vaporisation of the most superficial epidermal layers.
This allows for precise, superficial resurfacing, leading to true skin renewal, a smoother surface, a mild tightening effect on the treated areas and dermal stimulation with improved collagen and elastin. Compared with CO₂, Erbium works more superficially, with very accurate depth control and shorter downtime, with redness usually resolving more quickly.
At MAVIT, the Erbium:YAG laser is used for ablative superficial skin rejuvenation (laser skin resurfacing), fine facial lines (forehead, periocular area, upper lip “barcode” lines), selected superficial acne scars, seborrhoeic keratoses and other superficial benign lesions, as well as certain warts and fibromas in suitable locations. In selected cases, it can be combined with a CO₂ laser to achieve deeper, more comprehensive resurfacing.
