Hyperhidrosis: excessive sweating and botulinum toxin

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by excessive, uncontrolled sweating, often out of proportion to the ambient temperature or physical activity. It can affect the underarms, palms, soles, face or other areas, causing embarrassment, social discomfort and the need for frequent clothing changes.

Hyperhidrosis is diagnosed when sweating is persistent even at rest and interferes with daily activities such as dressing, working or shaking hands. It may be primary (with no obvious cause, often familial) or secondary to medications or systemic diseases, which must be ruled out with the physician.

Therapeutic perspectives

At MAVIT, after excluding general causes and performing a dermatologic evaluation, treatment may include medical antiperspirants and, when indicated, botulinum toxin injections in areas such as the underarms, palms, soles or forehead to temporarily block sweat gland activity. Botulinum toxin treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, its effect usually lasts several months and it can be safely repeated according to specialist advice. The goal is to significantly reduce sweating and restore comfort and freedom in everyday gestures, improving quality of life and social wellbeing.
