Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a sun-induced skin lesion, considered precancerous because, over time, it can develop into a squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. It appears mainly after the age of 40, on fair and photo-damaged skin, in the most exposed areas: face, ears, lips, backs of the hands, and the scalp in bald patients.

It typically presents as a red, rough and scaly patch or plaque, which to the touch feels like “sandpaper”. It is an important warning sign of chronic sun damage: to prevent it, proper photoprotection is essential, including high-SPF sunscreens, hats and appropriate clothing.

Therapeutic options

At MAVIT, actinic keratosis is always managed as a precancerous lesion, with the aim of removing it and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Depending on the case, the dermatologist may recommend specific topical creams, cryotherapy, CO₂ laser treatment, surgical removal or Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), within a personalised treatment plan and regular dermatological follow-up.
