Histologic examination is the microscopic analysis of a tissue sample taken by biopsy or surgical excision. It is the gold standard for many dermatologic and oncologic diagnoses, as it clarifies whether a lesion is benign, malignant, inflammatory or related to autoimmune, infectious or degenerative diseases.
Once the sample is taken, it is fixed, processed in the pathology laboratory, embedded, cut into very thin sections, stained and examined under the microscope. The pathologist issues a report describing the type of lesion, any tumour cells and their grade, and the status of the surgical margins. Histology is indicated in suspected skin cancer, atypical or doubtful lesions and after removal of moles, keratoses, cysts, lipomas and other cutaneous or subcutaneous nodules.
