Skin biopsy: targeted tissue sampling and histology

A skin biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a small piece of skin is taken from a lesion or suspicious area and examined under the microscope by histology. It is performed to clarify the nature of a lesion, distinguish between similar skin conditions and confirm whether a pigmented lesion, nodule or plaque is benign or malignant.

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and usually takes only a few minutes. Depending on the site and type of lesion, the doctor may use an excisional scalpel biopsy, a punch, a curette or a superficial shave; at the end, a simple dressing or a few stitches are applied. The specimen is then sent to a pathology laboratory for histological analysis, which remains the gold standard for many cutaneous cancers and for complex inflammatory or autoimmune skin diseases.

Therapeutic perspectives

At MAVIT, skin biopsy is recommended only after specialist dermatologic assessment, when additional information is needed to reach a precise diagnosis. The procedure is mini-invasive, performed under local anaesthesia with careful attention to biopsy site and aesthetic outcome.

After the biopsy, patients receive clear instructions on wound care, stitch removal and how to minimise infection and visible scarring. Once the histology report is available, the dermatologist explains the result and defines the most appropriate management plan, which may include simple follow-up, wider excision, topical or systemic therapies and structured surveillance. In this way, skin biopsy becomes a key step in a comprehensive, personalised diagnostic and therapeutic pathway.
